How “at risk” is counted. A narrative that breaks clause 2.2, 3.2 or 4.1 puts the whole line at risk, because the client can reject it as written. For the caps in 3.1, 4.2 and 5.1 only the excess is at risk: the rate above the cap, the hours above 4.0 in one entry, or the hours above 8.0 in one day (taken from the entry that goes past 8.0, after the other cuts). No dollar is counted twice.

In this preview the narrative rules are simple text tests: two or more tasks split by semicolons (2.2), a listed internal-conference or clerical phrase (3.2), a narrative that is only a stock phrase such as “worked on case” (4.1). The real check reads each narrative against the guideline’s own wording, quotes the clause word for word, shows a flag whose quote cannot be verified as Needs review instead, and leaves every flagged or uncertain entry for you to review.

Your work

Sign in to upload your client’s outside-counsel guideline and a draft invoice (a LEDES 1998B file, a CSV or an Excel export), review the rule list, buy credits, and follow each check from upload to finished report. Ordinary code applies the numeric and structural rules and quotes the clause text word for word. Claude on Amazon Bedrock (processed within EU regions) proposes rules for the parts of the guideline written in prose and reads each narrative, answering Pass, Flag or Uncertain with a citation. Rules are proposed and applied as the check runs; before the report is final you confirm, switch off or adjust each one in the review. A flag whose quoted clause cannot be found word for word in the guideline is shown as Needs review, never as a flag, and Uncertain always goes to you.

You review every flagged or uncertain entry, then download the annotated invoice (CSV or Excel), a report (Markdown and PDF) and your confirmed rules to reuse with that client’s next invoice. The dollar figure in the report is the billed value of the flagged entries, not savings. BillPrecheck never edits or submits an invoice, and it flags possible guideline issues for you to review: it is not legal or ethics advice.

Your billing coordinator already knows this feeling

Guidelines live as a PDF or a portal login, one per corporate client, each with its own list of rules — no block billing, travel-time caps, minimum increments, narratives specific enough to survive review. Someone checks entries against them from memory or a shared spreadsheet before the invoice goes out.

The first time a violation is caught for certain is often when the client's e-billing system rejects or writes down the line item — after the work is already done and the write-down is final. A recent write-down like that is usually what starts the search for a better way to catch it first.

Compliance tools do exist. Brightflag and BusyLamp are bought by the corporate client's legal team to review your bills after you send them. Laurel and PointOne sell checks to law firms themselves, mainly to mid-size and large firms, by quote; Billables AI lists compliance checks on its top per-seat plan. At a 5–25 lawyer firm, the check before sending is usually still memory and a spreadsheet.

How the Precheck Report works

You upload your client's outside-counsel guideline after you sign in. Ordinary code turns its numbers into rules and Claude proposes rules for the prose parts. The rules are proposed and applied to your entries; in the review, before the report is final, you confirm, switch off or adjust each rule (a numeric rule’s number can be changed), and the confirmed list comes back as a file you can reuse for that client.
You upload your time entries as a LEDES 1998B file, a CSV or an Excel export. Every narrative is checked against the rules from the guideline, or against your confirmed rules file if you upload one with the invoice.
You review the flagged and uncertain entries with the exact clause quoted. Accept, edit or override; the annotated invoice comes back as a CSV or Excel file with a report. Nothing is sent from inside the tool, and it never edits or submits your invoice.

Where another option is the better choice. If your firm already pays for Laurel, PointOne Rules or Billables AI Premium and it works, you probably don't need us: all three say they check entries against a client's billing rules, and all three connect to Clio^1,3,11,12. Billables AI also drafts the narratives. Laurel and Billables AI work as time is captured, which we don't; we check the draft invoice before it goes out. If you need a direct connection to your billing system today, all three have one and we don't yet.

And if your corporate clients rarely reject or write down a line, the risk is small for your firm and a spreadsheet may be enough.

Not in the table: PointOne Rules reads guideline documents and enforces the rules it extracts, for firms on Aderant, Clio, Elite 3E and SurePoint, and is marketed to mid-size and large firms; it publishes no price (no pricing page exists)^3,8. Brightflag and BusyLamp^5,6 are bought by your corporate client's in-house legal team to review your bills after you send them, not sold to your firm, so there is no price to compare.

Founder decision, 28 September 2026: we replaced our monthly per-firm pricing with pay-as-you-go credits, the same four packs used across every product we run (25 credits/$25, 100/$90, 500/$400, 2,000/$1,400). The previous entry price was Starter, $570 a month, priced against a reference firm of 5 timekeepers. At the founders' reference volume of 25 invoices a month, $570 ÷ 25 = $22.80 an invoice, rounded to 23 credits — $23.00 at the Starter-pack rate. The reasoning behind that $570 figure still holds as the historical anchor: it was set 20% below Billables AI Premium billed annually ($169 × 0.85 = $143.65 a seat, $718.25 a month at 5 timekeepers)^9,12, the cheapest competitor whose published plan checks time entries against a specific client's guideline for a firm this size. At our reference volume of 25 invoices a month (575 credits, the 2,000-credit pack rate), our cost is $16.10 an invoice; Billables AI's $718.25/month at 5 seats billed annually, divided by 25 invoices, is $28.73 an invoice ($33.80 at its $845 month-to-month price ÷ 25) — its own monthly seat price divided by invoice count, not a per-invoice charge, but the closest comparison available. Both our $23.00 starter rate and our $16.10 pack rate are below it. Not used as the benchmark, with the reason unchanged: Laurel and PointOne Rules do the check but sell only by custom quote, so there is no price to compare^2,8; Clio Manage is a practice-management suite in which guideline checking is one bundled feature, and its price could not be confirmed on Clio's own page^3,7; doing it by hand is not a product you buy. Packs are bought whole and up front; unused credits carry over and are never lost — at 25 invoices a month, a 2,000-credit pack lasts about 3.5 months. Competitor prices change — check each vendor's current page before you decide.

Monthly cost at two reference volumes

25 invoices a month (the founders' reference volume): 575 credits/month, which the rule below puts at the 2,000-pack rate ($0.70): $402.50/month, $16.10 an invoice. At that rate, a 2,000-credit pack lasts about 3.5 months.
125 invoices a month (an unsourced estimate scaling the same 5 invoices per timekeeper to a 25-timekeeper firm): 2,875 credits/month, also at the 2,000-pack rate: $2,012.50/month, $16.10 an invoice.

Rule: a customer buys the pack that matches their monthly need — under 100 credits a month uses the 100-pack rate ($0.90); 100–499 uses the 500-pack rate ($0.80); 500 or more uses the 2,000-pack rate ($0.70). Packs are bought whole and up front; unused credits carry over and are never lost. The monthly figures above are the credits used, valued at that pack’s rate; what you pay at checkout is the whole pack.

Security and how we handle your documents

We're a two-person company. We don't hold SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA certification today. If your corporate client requires one, tell us and we'll say plainly whether we're a fit yet.
The preview above runs only on the synthetic samples shown. It never touches real client or matter data, it has no upload, and anything you type into the preview stays in your browser and is gone when you reload. Uploads happen only after you sign in, in Your work.
Time-entry narratives can reveal privileged work. You decide what to redact before you upload. Please check that your engagement terms with the client allow you to share its guideline and billing data with a vendor; some guidelines restrict this.
How we handle a real document: it is used only to produce your report and is sent to Claude on Amazon Bedrock and processed within EU regions, where it is not used to train any model. Our logs record job identifiers and status, never the text of your documents. Uploads never used in a job are deleted after 72 hours; jobs that fail, are rejected or are never paid, after 14 days; paid work, after 365 days. You can delete a job, or your whole account, at any time. Our privacy policy names every subprocessor, and a data processing agreement is available on request at hello@billprecheck.com.
Hosting is in the EU, for US firms too, with documents stored in AWS Frankfurt (eu-central-1): your files and results.
BillPrecheck flags possible guideline issues for you to review. It's not legal or ethics advice, it doesn't decide what's billable, and the responsible lawyer stays accountable for every invoice.

Questions we expect

We already use Clio's AI to draft narratives — why do we need this too?

Clio's AI drafts the narrative. BillPrecheck's job starts after that: it checks the narrative — from Clio or anywhere else — line by line against your specific client's guideline text, and shows you the exact clause behind every flag. We haven't independently verified how deep Clio's own guideline checking goes for a specific client's wording; see the comparison table above for what a competitor's page says about it.

Our client only sends the guideline as a PDF — will you actually catch our specific rules?

Upload the guideline in Your work after you sign in. Ordinary code turns its numbers into rules, Claude proposes rules for the prose, the rules are applied, and you confirm, switch off or adjust them in the review before the report is final. A file we can't read is reported by name, and a rule we can't check reliably is listed as "not checked" or shown as Needs review, not silently skipped.

Will an AI touch our client-facing bills without a lawyer reviewing anything?

No. It only flags and explains. Every flagged or uncertain entry goes back to your billing timekeeper or partner to accept, edit or override, nothing is ever sent to a client from inside the tool, and it never edits or submits an invoice. The billing judgment stays with the responsible lawyer.

We don't bill enough corporate-guideline work to justify a monthly fee.

Honest answer: there's no monthly fee to justify. Credits are pay-as-you-go and never expire — buy the 25-credit Starter pack ($25) and use it whenever you actually have an invoice to check (23 credits per check). If you only run one a year, you're not paying for the months in between. The preview shows the idea for free on invented invoices, and the 25-credit pack buys your first real check.

Which billing systems do you support?

Today: LEDES 1998B files, and CSV or Excel exports of time entries. We'll name Clio, Tabs3 or TimeSolv here only once we've tested a real export from each; a direct sync depends on what each system exposes.

How long does setup actually take?

There is nothing to install. Sign in, upload the guideline and an invoice, review the rules and the flags: you confirm, switch off or adjust each rule before the report is final. Each new client guideline needs one review session to confirm its rules; that work is inside the 23 credits for the check.

Is this legal advice?

No. It flags possible guideline issues for the billing lawyer to decide on. BillPrecheck doesn't decide what's billable, and it isn't legal or ethics advice.
